Requirements
- NQF Level 2 qualification
- Grade 12 / Senior Certificate / AET (Adult Education Training) will be an added advantage
Skills and Knowledge:
- Good reading, writing, and verbal communication skills
- Basic knowledge of water distribution in government water works
- Basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
- Basic knowledge of flood control
- Basic record-keeping skills
Duties
- Open and close sluices according to scheme regulations
- Manage water distribution sheets
- Perform minor maintenance on structures, fencing, and sluices
- Assist with clearing blocked pipes and canals
- Remove algae and water grass from canals regularly
- Conduct daily inspections and report issues
Monitoring & Reporting:
- Report holes in embankments and irregularities in canals
- Check for cracks in measuring structures and report defects
- Report stagnant water on embankments
Maintenance Tasks:
- Paint sluices and weir structures
- Ensure sluice numbers are clearly marked
- Keep canal grids, gauge plates, and structures clean
- Ensure inlet holes to measuring boxes are always open
- Clean and secure post boxes
- Repair minor washouts and equipment when necessary
- Safeguard tools and keep storerooms locked
